Software

Failed payment recovery software for Stripe.

Stunning works alongside Stripe to win back more failed payments with smarter emails, SMS, backup cards, and a branded card update page. It also supports Foxy and Subbly with a smaller feature set.

Stripe on its own vs. Stripe + Stunning

Keep Stripe's retries on and turn off its customer emails. Stunning sends better ones and adds what's missing.

Stripe on its own Stripe + Stunning
Failed payment emails The same email after every failed attempt Up to eight different emails, written by you, that get more urgent each time
Channels and contacts Email only, to one address unless you add CCs by hand Email, SMS, and an in-app notice, with every billing contact CC'd
Expiring cards One email a month before the card expires An automatic card update attempt, then three warnings
Backup cards Retries only the card on file Switches to the customer's backup card and charges it
After retries run out Recovery stops once the subscription is unpaid or cancelled A win-back sequence for months, and automatic reactivation when they pay

What Stripe's built-in recovery doesn't do

Stunning replaces Stripe's failed payment emails and catches the failed payments its retries miss.

1

Before a payment fails

Catch expiring cards early

Stripe sends one email a month before a card expires. We first try to update the card automatically. If that doesn't work, we send warnings at 30, 15, and 7 days.

Charge the backup card

We ask customers to add a second card, with a discount you choose as the incentive. When the main card fails, we switch to the backup and charge it. If that fails too, we switch back.

Show a notice inside your app

When a card is about to expire, has expired, or has failed, show a notice inside your app, with a different message for each case. Customers see it while they're already using your product.

2

When a payment fails

A different message every time

Stripe sends the same email after every failed attempt. Stunning sends up to eight different ones from your own address, each more urgent than the last. Choose which version each customer gets by plan, amount, or metadata.

Reach the right person

The person who owns the card often isn't the one who reads the email. We CC every billing contact stored on the customer, and you can BCC your own team.

Text them, too

Stripe only sends email. Stunning can send up to eight texts, each with a link to update their card. Replies come straight into Slack.

Card updates without logging in

Every message links to a secure payment page that supports Apple Pay and Google Pay. Customers can update their card without logging in, and the page can run on your own domain.

Follow up on abandoned payment pages

Some customers start updating their card and get distracted. If they leave the payment page without finishing, we follow up with them automatically.

Retry at better times

On top of Stripe's retries, Stunning retries failed payments at the times most likely to work for your customers, over up to 21 days.

3

After retries run out

Tell them when there are consequences

Some customers won't act until something happens. We email them when their subscription is marked unpaid or cancelled for failed payments.

Keep going after Stripe stops

Once a subscription is marked unpaid, we send a win-back sequence over the following months. If the customer updates their card, we reactivate the subscription and charge as many past-due invoices as you choose.

One more nudge each month

Once a month, send one more email to every customer who is still past due, in one click. It reaches people who ignored the automated emails.

4

What you see

Know when to step in

Get Slack alerts when a customer goes past due, pays, runs out of retries, or has an email bounce. If a cancelled customer comes back and updates their card, we tell you so you can restart their subscription.

A weekly recovery report

Every failed payment and recovery from the past week, in your inbox, so you know what's happening without logging in.

See what brought the money back

Every recovered payment is credited to the email, SMS, in-app notice, retry, or backup card that recovered it, by month and by plan.

Using Foxy or Subbly?

We support failed payment recovery on both. The feature set is smaller than on Stripe, so here's exactly what's included.

Subbly

  • Up to three dunning emails, a different one for each failed attempt
  • Different versions for different customers, chosen by plan, amount, or other fields
  • Smart retries between Subbly's own retries
  • Charge only the newest past-due invoices when a customer updates their card, and optionally void the older ones
  • An email when a subscription is cancelled for failed payments
  • Draft mode, BCCs to your team, and recovered revenue tracking

Foxy

  • Up to three dunning emails, a different one for each failed attempt
  • An in-app notification bar that sends customers to your Foxy customer portal
  • Draft mode, BCCs to your team, and recovered revenue tracking

SMS, backup cards, pre-dunning, and Stunning-hosted payment pages are Stripe-only. Compare all three platforms.

How it works

Your billing platform keeps retrying cards. Stunning takes over the messages your customers get.

  1. Connect your account

Connect Stripe, Foxy, or Subbly. We start watching for failed payments right away.

  2. Switch your emails to Stunning

Start from our tested templates and edit them to match your brand. Then turn off Stripe's failed payment and expiring card emails in your Stripe settings, so customers only hear from you through Stunning.

  3. We recover payments

When a payment fails, we email the customer with a different message on each attempt, and retry at better times on Stripe and Subbly. On Stripe, we also charge backup cards, CC billing contacts, send SMS, and follow up when someone leaves the card update page.

  4. See what came back

Track recovered revenue each month, and see which message or method recovered it.

Pricing

Simple monthly pricing

You pay a flat monthly fee based on your MRR. We never take a percentage of what we recover, and every plan includes every feature.

Every plan starts with a 15-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

I already use Stripe's Smart Retries and failed payment emails. Why do I need Stunning?

Keep Smart Retries on, but turn off Stripe's failed payment and expiring card emails. Stunning sends better ones and adds what Stripe doesn't do:

  • A different email for each failed attempt, in your words and from your address, chosen by plan, amount, or metadata
  • CCs to every billing contact stored on the customer, and BCCs to anyone on your team
  • A win-back sequence after the subscription is marked unpaid, and automatic reactivation when they pay
  • SMS and an in-app notice, not just email
  • Three expiring-card warnings instead of one, sent only after we've tried to update the card automatically
  • Backup cards that are charged automatically when the main card fails, and follow-ups when someone leaves the update page
How hard is it to get started? Do I need a developer?

Most accounts are set up in minutes using our prewritten templates. You only need a developer for a few advanced features. If you'd rather not do it yourself, we'll set everything up for you with our free concierge migration.

How does pricing work? Do you take a percentage of recoveries?

No. You pay a flat monthly fee based on your MRR, and we never take a cut of what we recover. Use the slider above to see your price. Our goal is for Stunning to bring in far more than it costs you.

Is there a free trial?

Yes, for 15 days. We'll email you before it ends. If you need more time, just reply to that email.

What is dunning?

Dunning is the process of reminding customers that a payment failed and asking them to update their payment details.

I use Foxy or Subbly. What do you support?

On both platforms, you get up to three dunning emails that change with each failed attempt, draft mode, BCCs to your team, and recovered revenue tracking. On Subbly, we also run smart retries, choose templates per customer, control which past-due invoices get charged, and email customers when a subscription is cancelled for failed payments. On Foxy, we also show an in-app notification bar that links to your Foxy customer portal. SMS, backup cards, pre-dunning, and our own payment pages are Stripe-only. See the full comparison.

How do you connect to my Stripe account?

Through Stripe Connect. After you create a Stunning account, Stripe asks you to grant us access, and a secure connection is set up between your Stripe account and Stunning.

Can you send failed payment events to other tools?

Yes. We can send failed payment events to Slack and Zapier.
